Research finds music-making has a significant effect on cognitive function for older adults with dementia

A recent study examined the results of randomized controlled trials that used active music-making with older adults with probable mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or a diagnosis of dementia. The studies required participants to physically engage in music, and measured the effects on cognitive functioning, emotional well-being, and social engagement.

The meta-analysis reviewed 9 studies, involving nearly 500 participants and found engaging in music had a positive effect on cognitive functioning, emotional well-being in terms of quality of life and mood.

The authors concluded that participating in music-making is engaging and has diverse benefits.
