Expressing life’s joys through song

Claire* has been engaging in music therapy for a number of years and is currently accessing music therapy to help support her psychosocial wellbeing, including creating opportunities for self-expression, developing confidence, and emotional regulation. Through playing various percussion instruments and the keyboard, Claire is supporting her fine motor skills and cognitive functioning (motor planning, attention, decision making and much more)!

As well as supporting various physical, cognitive and socioemotional goals, Claire finds great enjoyment in music therapy sessions. Her mother recounted that it is a great joy to hear Claire’s laughter and music resounding through the house during her music therapy sessions.

Recently in music therapy sessions, Claire has started on a new project. She has been creating original songs featuring what is important in her life. These songs feature Claire on various instruments, with her therapist and disability support worker supporting her musically and vocally. The songs will be recorded and put together for Claire to have as a physical memento of her music therapy journey. Here is one of Claire’s songs about a beloved toy that she created in a recent session, featuring Claire on xylophone, her disability support worker on maraca, and her music therapist on guitar, with all three contributing to the vocals.
